Memphis Light, Gas & Water Quality Assurance Testing Laboratory

Memphis is home to many unique treasures, but perhaps one of the most vital and coveted is its magnificent drinking water. Few cities in the world can boast water that is as pure, refreshing and tasteful as that found in our own hometown. While most of the world’s drinking water originates from surface lakes, streams and rivers, Memphians enjoy the unique privilege of water derived from the Memphis Sands aquifer. This subterranean treasure contains more than 100 trillion gallons of rainwater that some experts believe fell more than 2000 years ago. The pristine nature of this water springs from a natural filtration system of alternating layers of clay, sand and gravel that sift out the impurities.
This modernization of an existing testing laboratory concentrated on envelope moisture mitigation and seismic upgrades to Category IV design class in addition to interior renovation and lab upgrades,
The existing building envelope was demolished down to the bare metal studs and existing structure. The existing Kalwall barrel vault lobby was also removed. The new exterior envelope used proportional relationships in response to the existing context of early Works Projects Administration buildings on the site. The existing buildings range in style from Beaux Arts, Art Deco and Brutalism—all with an identifiable proportional rhythm. The existing brick veneer was recycled and reincorporated back into the new envelope. New aluminum panels were systematically introduced into the new envelope to reinforce the existing proportional context.
