This Adaptive Re-Use project contributed to the re-development of a 31,000 s.f. warehouse facility that had been abandoned for almost 20 years. As the new home for both the Memphis Youth Hockey League and the Figure Skating Club of Memphis, this public ice arena allows year-round access. Prior to opening, the Mid-South area was known nationwide as the largest untapped market for public ice skating.
The public accesses the main entry via a new terraced plaza designed to ground the elevated existing truck docks while also giving it a sense of place and human scale. The interior was naturally separated into “hot and cold” environments. The “hot side” contains the warm & cozy main lobby emulating a ski lodge, an elevated dining & viewing platform, pro shop, concession area, ticket area and party rooms. The “cold side” contains the main rink, (4) locker rooms and administration offices.
